Search Options

There are seven powerful search engines or options in the Internet edition of the scriptures.

Word Search
This option searches for words in the scriptures and study helps that match words entered in the search box. You can enter one or more words. Try entering faith hope charity or old bottles and then clicking Word Search.

Topic Search
This option searches for topics in the scriptures that match words entered in the search box. Relevant references are drawn from the study helps. Topic Search analyzes the relationships among topics in the study helps and attempts to present the most relevant scripture references. Unlike a word search, Topic Search finds references spanning a range of verses and references beyond the actual topic word(s) being searched. You can enter one or more words. Try entering Liahona or Jesus family or missionary work and then clicking Topic Search.

Study Helps Search
This option searches for titles, headings, or entries in the study helps (Guide to the Scriptures, Bible Dictionary, Topical Guide, Index to the triple combination, photographs and maps) that match words entered in the search box. You can enter one or more words. Try entering Nazareth or baptism or law of Moses and then clicking Study Helps Search.

Reference Search
This option searches for scripture references entered in the search box. You can enter one or more references. References can also be copied and pasted from other applications. Standard reference formats are required. Try entering Mosiah 3: 19-21 or Luke 2: 1-7, 13-14, 19 or Micah 5: 1-2; John 7: 41-44; Alma 7: 10 and then clicking Reference Search.

Footnote Search
This option searches for the footnotes associated with a scripture verse or a range of verses. To initiate footnote searching, click any footnoted word in the scripture text or enter references in the search box. Try entering Gen. 2: 9 or 2 Nephi 31: 19-21 and then (1) clicking Search and (2) clicking Show Footnotes on the bottom of the search results page.

Cross-Reference Search
This option searches for all cross-references in the footnotes and study helps that point “toward” a given scripture verse or range of verses. In contrast, because of space limitations, the references in the footnotes of the printed editions of the scriptures point only “outward” to a few selected references and Topical Guide entries. To initiate a cross-reference search, click on any footnoted word in the scripture text and then click Show Cross-References, or enter references in the search box. Try entering Gen. 1: 1 or Mosiah 3: 19 and then (1) clicking Search and (2) clicking Show Cross-References on the bottom of the search results page.

Marked References Search
This option searches for references you have marked for storing and later displaying on the Marked References page. To mark a reference, click the text of a scripture verse while holding down the Alt key (on some computers this is called the Alternate or Option key). The marked verse will be displayed in red. To unmark a reference, click the same text again while holding down the Alt key. You can clear all your marked references by clicking Clear Marked References on the Marked References search results page. Try marking several scripture verses and then clicking Marked on the top right of the page.
